The Advantage of Uncertainty
Currency collapses overnight. Borders close without warning. Customs rules shift between the quote and the shipment date. For IAM members, uncertainty is their natural operating environment. Yet, the companies that keep growing are not the ones who found a way to eliminate that uncertainty. They’re the ones who stopped waiting for it to go away.
Leaders across the industry keep arriving at the same conclusions. Communication replaces false confidence: the companies that keep partners informed, even when the outcome is unclear, are the ones trusted when it matters most. Distributed authority replaces paralysis: businesses that empower the people closest to a relationship to make the call, rather than routing it through a desk on the other side of the world, are the ones that can move at the speed a crisis demands. And trust built long before any crisis begins becomes the asset that carries a company through it.
None of that gets built over email; it gets built in a room. This October, the IAM Annual Meeting & Expo returns to San Diego for its 64th year, bringing together more than 1,800 moving professionals from over 100 countries for four days that no video call can replicate. This year’s theme, Navigating the Current, reflects exactly what professional movers do every day. This theme honors the expertise and judgment required to navigate conditions that rarely stand still, and the ability to read what others may not see coming.
Why Leaders Show Up
Ask any veteran why they keep coming back, and you’ll hear the same answer: the people who make the decisions are in the room. Nearly nine in ten attendees hold the authority to act. Roughly 48% are CEOs, presidents, owners, and managing directors; another 22% lead sales and business development. This industry is built on relationships, and one conversation in San Diego can open a market, strengthen a partnership, solve a problem, or advance an opportunity. Because the person who can say yes is often standing right across the table.
The impact goes well beyond a single conversation. The companies that show up consistently stay top of mind when the next opportunity comes along. In an industry built on relationships, opportunities often start simply by being in the room.
There’s a governance dimension, too. IAM’s Executive Committee elections and volunteer committee meetings happen here, giving members a direct voice in the decisions and priorities that guide their association. And when the industry comes together to tackle issues like AI advancements, CMMC, combating rogue movers, and the challenges affecting business around the world, those conversations move forward whether your company is in the room or not. The choice is whether your perspective is part of them. Year after year, the leaders who have built some of the most successful and enduring companies in this industry choose to show up and be part of the conversation.
In San Diego, IAM is putting that principle into practice through IAMTrusted.
What The IAMTrusted Designation Means in San Diego
If your company carries the IAMTrusted designation, San Diego is where that investment pays dividends.
The IAMTrusted Moving Company (ITMC) designation represents IAM’s boldest step yet in consumer protection and industry accountability. It tells customers, partners, and competitors alike that your company has agreed to operate by a higher standard. It is, in the clearest terms this industry has, trust made visible and built long before any customer's crisis begins, so that it is already there the moment they need it.
The designation is your ticket to the IAMTrusted Members-Only Roundtable Workshop on Thursday, October 22, which will bring together the organizations that procure moving services with the companies delivering them to discuss trust, procurement, technology, and the future of our industry. Representatives from SIRVA, Aires, K2 Corporate Mobility, the U.S. Department of State, GSA, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank are participating in the discussions.
If your company hasn’t yet pursued IAMTrusted, San Diego is your opportunity to see the designation at work. Look for the IAMTrusted badge throughout the meeting. Talk to the companies carrying it. Ask what it has meant for their business and the relationships they’re building. Then stop by the IAMTrusted Lounge in the Expo Hall to see what your company needs to take the next step. By next year, you could be wearing the badge and walking into the conversations that come with it.
