Adaptability: The Journey That Shaped Retrans International
By Sjaril Bahar, Director, PT. Retrans International
I have been with Retrans International since the day it was founded in 1997. Watching the company grow from a small moving and storage business into a specialized logistics provider has taught me many lessons, but perhaps the most important is the true meaning of adaptability. Like many businesses, our early years were focused on building expertise, serving customers, and establishing our presence in the relocation industry. At that time, I believed that adaptability was something a company demonstrated only during times of crisis.
That belief was tested sooner than I expected. In 1998, Indonesia experienced a period of severe political and economic unrest. The riots that swept across the country prompted many expatriates to leave Indonesia, leading to a significant decline in international moving activity. As a result, the moving industry was heavily affected, and it took two to three years for the market to recover.
Instead of waiting for conditions to improve, we decided to take action and adapt. We shifted our focus toward services that could provide greater stability despite external economic conditions. Looking back, that decision became one of the defining moments in our company’s journey.
Indonesia, an archipelago stretching across more than 17,000 islands from Sumatra to Papua, presents unique logistical challenges as well as tremendous opportunities. Recognizing this potential, we expanded beyond household relocation into specialized logistics and distribution.
One of our breakthrough opportunities came when a leading pharmaceutical company entrusted us with the distribution of laboratory equipment and medical products to hospitals and laboratories throughout Indonesia. This project required an entirely different set of capabilities from traditional moving services. Unlike residential relocations, laboratory logistics demand meticulous planning and technical expertise. Every delivery begins with a detailed site assessment. We must determine whether the destination can be accessed using passenger or freight elevators, stairways, or loading facilities. When conventional access is not possible, our teams must safely utilize specialized equipment such as forklifts, scaffolding, cranes, and rigging systems to complete the installation.
Years later, that laboratory logistics experience proved invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many industries experienced significant slowdowns, the demand for laboratory and medical logistics increased dramatically. Our monthly sales grew to two to three times our normal business volume, largely driven by the urgent need to transport medical and laboratory equipment across the country.
Over the years, I’ve come to realize that adaptability is not simply a response to crisis. It is a continuous process of learning, improving, and embracing new opportunities. Every new project challenges us to develop new technical skills, strengthen our operational capabilities, and expand our understanding of specialized logistics.
The moving industry is changing rapidly. Customer expectations continue to evolve. Technology continues to reshape the way we operate. Sustainability is becoming a priority. Specialized logistics services are growing faster than ever before.
Today, when I look at Retrans International, I no longer see just a moving company. We have evolved into a trusted logistics partner capable of handling complex moving, storage, and specialized transportation projects. Our journey has taught us that resilience is built through adaptability, and that every challenge presents an opportunity to grow.
As the logistics and moving industry continues to evolve, I believe the companies that will thrive are those willing to learn, innovate, and adapt before change becomes a necessity. That mindset has guided Retrans International for nearly three decades, and it will continue to shape our future.
If there is one lesson I would share with fellow IAM members, it is this: Don’t wait for change to force you to adapt. Choose to adapt before change arrives.
Every new skill you learn, every capability you develop, and every challenge you overcome becomes the foundation for your next opportunity. And sometimes, the biggest growth comes from a business you never expected to be in.
