Getting the Most Out of Your IAM Annual Meeting Experience
Attending industry conferences can be an excellent opportunity to network, gain knowledge, and explore new business possibilities. One such conference that left a lasting impression on me as the Founder and CEO of Shipeezi was the IAM Annual Meeting in Atlanta.
As a first-time attendee, I discovered several valuable strategies to maximize my experience and make the most of this significant event. In this article, I would like to share some insights and tips on how to get the most out of your conference experience.
Plan Ahead: The key to a successful conference experience starts with careful planning. Take the time to review the conference schedule and identify the sessions and events that are most relevant to your goals. However, in addition to attending sessions, I found it crucial to focus on booking meetings beforehand. Identify the top 10 people you want to connect with and reach out to them before the conference. Remember, quality connections are more valuable than quantity.
Set Objectives: Define clear goals for what you want to achieve during the conference. Whether you are looking to secure more business partnerships or find a solid destination partner, keep your objectives simple and clear. This will help you stay focused and make the most of your time at the conference.
Research: Familiarize yourself with the speakers and exhibitors before the conference. Look into the companies and individuals you want to engage with. Connecting with them on LinkedIn is an excellent starting point for building relationships even before the event. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the floor plan and identify the suppliers who can contribute to your business. Allocate time to have meaningful conversations with them.
Network: Actively engage in networking opportunities and connect with fellow attendees. If you find yourself in a group where you don’t know anyone, introduce yourself and be an active listener. Engage in the networking events as they provide an excellent platform for building relationships. One aspect I found particularly remarkable about the Annual Meeting was how socially active and welcoming the attendees were.
Attend Sessions: Choose sessions that align with your interests and participate actively. Actively engaging in sessions allows you to expand your knowledge, learn from industry experts, and gain new perspectives. This will enhance your conference experience and provide valuable insights to take back to your organization.
Explore the Exhibition Hall: Don’t miss the opportunity to visit exhibitor booths and discover new products and services. The exhibition hall is a treasure trove of innovation and potential collaborations. Take your time to explore and connect with exhibitors who can contribute to your business growth. If you need to have a quick catch-up with anyone, designate a specific meeting point within the hall to optimize your time.
Utilize Social Media: Follow the conference’s social media accounts and engage online. LinkedIn, in particular, is an effective platform for connecting with people and companies you are interested in meeting before the conference. Utilize social media to stay updated with the latest conference news, connect with fellow attendees, and share your own experiences.
Take Breaks: Conferences can be overwhelming, with back-to-back sessions, networking events, and countless conversations. Pace yourself, take breaks, and recharge to maintain focus and energy. Additionally, make the most of the grab-and-go lunches provided at the conference, which are convenient for refuelling without missing out on valuable networking opportunities.
Share Your Experiences: Document and share your conference highlights. Whether through social media posts, blog articles, or internal reports, share your insights and experiences with your team and industry peers. It not only helps you solidify your own learnings but also contributes to the wider knowledge sharing within the industry.
Follow Up: After the conference concludes, don’t forget to connect with the new contacts you have made. LinkedIn is an excellent platform for reconnecting with those you met at IAM. However, keep in mind that post-conference, everyone will be inundated with emails. Keep your follow-up messages light and breezy, reminding the person of the connection you made and expressing your interest in further discussions.
Attending the IAM Annual Meeting was a game-changer for me and the team at Shipeezi. By planning ahead, setting objectives, networking actively, attending relevant sessions, exploring the exhibition hall, utilizing social media, taking breaks, and following up, I was able to make the most of this incredible event.
I encourage you to apply these strategies to your own conference experiences and unlock the full potential of these valuable opportunities.
