Sustainable Packing for Today’s Move and Tomorrow’s Environment
Sofrapak’s mission and vision is built on the concept of sustainable packaging. The company was founded on the idea of sustainability in 2005 and continues innovating packaging designed specifically for the moving industry. Our goal is to provide sustainable alternatives to products which are typically not: corrugated cardboard crates to replace wooden ones, and pleater (100% paper) to replace plastic bubble kraft.
In 2005 (19 years ago), everybody told us that movers won’t ever be interested in our crates; today, we supply most French international movers and many throughout Europe and beyond. Our battle has been to change mentalities and habits regarding packaging crates and wrap in the moving industry. In this struggle, we have taken many steps to ensure the sourcing of packaging materials is truly sustainable:
We get supplies only from Europe:
100% French sourcing for crates AND our cardboard is FSC certified AND it’s 86% already recycled.
100% European sourcing for the PleatWrap: the paper is FSC certified and 40% of the product is already recycled.
We made a life cycle analysis for both categories of products:
Our corrugated cardboard crates will emit 35% less CO2 emissions compared to wooden crates.
Our PleatWrap will emit 45% less CO2 emissions compared to plastic bubble kraft.
We balance sustainability with cost-effectiveness in the production of packing materials. Using all European supplies has a cost, but we believe these sources give the best quality. It’s always a calculation to get the best balance between cost-effectiveness, quality and price.
Our approach to waste reduction and recycling within our operations is straightforward: we try to reuse all of our cardboard scraps and, if we can’t, we recycle them. Every 1 ton of recycled cardboard saves 2,5t of wood! We have also refined our manufacturing process so that we don’t create any paper waste in the production of PleatWrap.
Sofrapak’s goals and aspirations in the realm of sustainable packaging include upcoming projects that we are particularly excited about. Our passion for the present day is to help movers to get rid of the landfill-choking plastic bubble kraft wrap and replace it with protective paper wrap. Additionally, two upcoming projects particularly excite us: we plan to build a unique machine to automate the production of our corrugated cardboard pallet feet, and we are building more machines to manufacture and supply PleatWrap as the inquiries continue to grow.
