My Advice and Journey as a Volunteer at IAM

President: Alan F. Wohlstetter Scholarship Fund Board

Member: Hall of Honor Selection Committee

I have been involved with IAM since 2011, starting as the YP representative for Latin America and currently serving as the President of the Alan F. Wohlfstetter Scholarship Fund and a member of the selection committee for the Hall of Honor.

Over the years, I have come to understand the importance of starting small and committing oneself to the cause. It requires extra effort and time to truly make a difference. As a volunteer, it's important to be present and dedicated to the position you commit to, as new opportunities can present themselves when you least expect them. Therefore, it's crucial to consider your availability before taking on any role.

As an industry professional, I believe that volunteering offers a unique opportunity to utilize one’s knowledge and experience to make a positive impact on the industry. It allows us to give back by sharing our skills and knowledge while providing a fresh perspective on important topics. Working with diverse volunteer groups and the IAM Team has helped me grow both personally and professionally.

When considering volunteer opportunities, it’s important to reflect on your interests and passions. Not all positions require the same level of public exposure, and choosing a role that aligns with your interests is essential for a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

From a professional development standpoint, volunteering has allowed me to push my boundaries, gain new skills and improve existing ones by taking on new organizational responsibilities and roles.

Being involved with IAM has been an enriching experience for me. I believe it gives industry professionals a chance to make a positive impact while gaining personal and professional benefits. I owe my journey as a volunteer at IAM to Terry Head, the former President of IAM, who introduced me to the organization and encouraged me to get involved. His passion and commitment to giving back through volunteering inspired me to follow in his footsteps, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue working with him and learning from him.
