China Reopens in the
Year of the Rabbit
This Lunar New Year is a very special holiday for us as we will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit at the same time as the reopening of our country (China). As you may have seen in the news, we have been through a lot during these past three years; especially the last one—so we are glad that this should be all over soon.
Nevertheless, the re-opening hasn’t been a pleasure ride either as for the past month, the virus has spread like wildfire through the country. 100% of our staff and family was infected during that period (it has been rather easy for the younger ones, unfortunately not so much for the eldest).
We wondered if members outside of China encountered the same stories when Covid was allowed to spread freely. Even though things seem to get better rather quickly, many families were in tough situations due to hospital congestion, shortage of medicines like paracetamol, and even long waiting lines to have bodies being taken away when, unfortunately, someone passed away.
Business-wise, we have to recognize that China’s zero-covid policy had some positive impacts as we had an all-time best year in 2022 in terms of outbound jobs. Our total moving service revenue has increased by 94%, which is historical. And, once we resume work after the Lunar New Year, we expect projects that were put on hold during the country’s lock-down to be put back on the table: I am referring to Chinese companies sending their staff overseas.
At the same time, re-opening means that we should see people and families coming back to China as well, so we are looking forward to taking care of their destination services! I am very excited for 2023, as it will be a year of renewal and of international mobility. I am also looking forward to seeing your thoughts and if you see some new China trends starting to emerge.
