What I Look for When Choosing a Partner
Over my 33 years in the household goods (HHG) moving industry, I have witnessed a multitude of shifting dynamics in international partnerships, driven by factors such as changes in ownership due to succession, bankruptcy, reengineering, wars, and political upheavals. These occurrences can unfold across the five continents, often without warning. By the time they become apparent, the damage has already been inflicted.
Financial stability is paramount when selecting a partner. We have witnessed companies abruptly ceasing operations, leaving clients stranded without support, shipments held up at ports and airports due to financial constraints, and the use of substandard packing materials and labor.
International chains and companies who have affiliations with reputable partners and association memberships tend to be the most stable. Also, organizations who actively participate in industry conferences, which provide invaluable platforms for face-to-face discussions. These events enable us to comprehend each other’s market challenges and reconcile our perceptions by sharing real-world impacts, conflicts, and hurdles.
Today, international compliant governance, data protection (for example, IAM’s Data Solutions Initiative), and adherence to IDEA values (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access; in line with the core values of IAM’s Leadership Alliance) have also become crucial criteria for partnerships, which can also boost sales. While these measures come at a cost, reflected in the differential pricing, they make a significant difference in ensuring genuine quality for our customers and peace of mind for us.
