Mental Wellness Advocacy

In this industry, who hasn’t experienced a stressful day due to an unexpected issue during a service? Or lost their patience trying to meet the demands of difficult clients? If you’re reading this, you can probably relate to these situations. Not because you’re doing a bad job, but because in this fast-paced industry, circumstances are sometimes beyond our control. However, it’s common to feel frustration, anxiety, and even depression when we think we’re not meeting expectations or are responsible for a mistake in the operation.

The pressure of time, unexpected events, dissatisfied customers, and the responsibility of transporting people’s most precious belongings all create tension. But there are other factors, like the work environment, that also affect our mental health. This is crucial because we spend a great deal of our time working and striving for professional growth.

That’s why it’s essential to take care of our employees and provide them with tools to manage both emotions and solutions in difficult times. As Young Professionals (YPs), we need to normalize talking about mental health. We share workspaces with people of different ages and backgrounds, where sometimes there’s no empathy towards this topic, and therefore, no one takes responsibility for it.

New generations have brought this issue to light and addressed it without taboos. Companies need to prioritize mental health to create harmony in the workplace and improve results. This translates into a greater sense of belonging, lower staff turnover, and increased performance, among other benefits.

How do we create a company culture that prioritizes mental health? By talking about it, normalizing it, and supporting each other. By creating spaces where tools are provided to promote mental health care, team-building activities to strengthen camaraderie and the importance of teamwork, being empathetic with our employees, and always remembering that we are all human and can make mistakes.

But it’s not just a company issue. As individuals, we also need to look after our well-being. Spending all day in front of a screen can be exhausting. It’s important not to focus our lives solely on work, but also on activities that relax and make us happy, like going to the gym, playing an instrument, running, traveling, spending time with family, and other activities that enrich our lives.
