Q & A with Simon Hood
2025 IAM Session Proposal Competition Winner
Q: What significant challenges or events led you to develop your media strategies?
When I took over the business, no one really knew who I was in the industry. I was a marketer stepping into a very old removals company, trying to make noise in a very crowded market. So, I launched a heavy campaign to shout about me, the brand, and the work we were doing, and I made sure we had fun doing it. The goal was simple: get noticed, stand out, and prove that marketing in this industry doesn’t have to be boring.
Q: What common methods of marketing do you find ineffective in this industry?
Corporate waffle. Anything that sounds like it was written by someone trying to impress a boardroom instead of an actual customer. You know the type, “We’re thrilled to announce…” No one’s thrilled. No one’s reading it. It’s the marketing equivalent of background noise. If your own team wouldn’t stop scrolling for it, why would anyone else?
Q: What is your advice to movers who say they don’t have time to market their company?
You do have time—you just haven’t made it a priority. But if you want better leads, not just more of them, you need to show people who you are and why you’re worth it. Good customers don’t just appear. They choose you based on what they see. If all they see is silence, they’ll go somewhere else. Marketing doesn't have to be complicated. Just show your work, tell your stories, and stop hiding.
Q: What’s the biggest takeaway you hope people remember from your session?
That you’re probably sitting on great stories already, you’ve just never thought to tell them. You don’t need to be a massive brand or spend a fortune to get noticed. You just need to stop thinking small.
The press doesn’t come knocking unless you give them something worth knocking for. This industry does incredible stuff every day. It’s time we started acting like it. Aim bigger. Ask for more. People are listening. you’ve just got to give them something to talk about.
