The New Transferee Wants More than a Mover
By Jordan Freiberg, Business Development, Orbit International Moving
Let’s be real. If all we’re offering is logistics, we’ve already lost the customer. Today’s transferees aren’t just looking for someone to schlep their stuff from Point A to Point B. They’re looking for a service that feels like it’s built around them. And they’re not shy about letting you know when it’s not.
People moving today are sharper, more connected, and more demanding than the ones we catered to five years ago. They expect clear communication. Fast answers. Technology that works. A human being who actually listens. They don’t care what our margins look like or how many containers we’ve handled this year. They care if we get their couch to Berlin on time and if their dog’s food shows up in the same box as the toys they packed for their kid’s first night in the new house. That’s the bar now.
We Can’t Hide Behind Paperwork Anymore
Gone are the days when transferees would nod along and accept long response times. Or when vague timelines and checklists passed for customer service. These days, clients are tracking their shipments like DoorDash orders. They want updates, explanations, and options. If there’s a delay, they don’t want excuses. They want solutions.
And here’s the kicker: they want it all without losing the personal touch. The new transferee wants to feel seen. Not just as another file or move ID, but as someone with real concerns and real stakes.
Tech is Expected, but it’s not Enough
Throwing a portal at someone and calling it a day doesn’t cut it. Yes, automation matters. Online inventory forms, digital surveys, photo uploads, real-time shipment tracking are all great. But if the client gets stuck on page two and can’t reach someone who speaks like a human being, all that tech is wasted.
The best experiences blend both: tech that’s actually helpful and people who don’t sound like they’re reading from a script. We’ve started building that into our own systems at Orbit. We’re not perfect, but every tweak we make is aimed at being faster, clearer, and more personal.
Young Professionals are Leading the Shift
It’s not just the clients who are changing. Inside the industry, it’s the younger professionals who are asking better questions and pushing for smarter solutions. They’re not clinging to “the way it’s always been done.” They’re challenging the status quo.
We’re the ones raising the bar from within. We’re the ones saying: What if we made this less painful? What if we actually improved that process instead of duct-taping it again? And when we get it right, clients notice. Not because we made something flashy, but because we made it easier.
So, Where do We Go from Here?
If you’re still reading, you’re probably nodding a little. You’ve seen this shift too. You’ve had the client who compares your process to their last Amazon return. You’ve had the call where the client says, “Wow, I didn’t expect that to be so easy,” and you know it wasn’t always that way.
Here’s what I think matters most going forward:
Keep listening: Everyone is different, but they’ll tell you what they want if you’re paying attention.
Simplify: Our clients don’t need to see the whole back end of what we do. They want clarity. Make it easy.
Stay flexible: The family that’s relocating for work isn’t worried about our operations manual. They’re trying to get their kids into school and keep their life from exploding. Help them breathe easier.
Own it: If something goes wrong, fix it. No hiding, no passing the buck. Just fix it and keep it moving.
Because at the end of the day, that’s what the new transferee really wants: someone who’s got their back.
